Masaaki Tsukada was a Japanese actor and voice actor born on December 16, 1938, in Kawasaki, Kanagawa, Japan. He passed away on January 27, 2014, at the age of 75. Tsukada began his career in acting after completing his training at the Engeki Kenkyujo theatre institute in 1959. He was a member of the Gekidan Tōgei acting troupe from 1964 before shifting his focus to voice acting and joining the agency Mausu Promotion, where he was under contract for the remainder of his career.
Tsukada's voice acting career spanned several decades, during which he was known for providing the voices for dignified, high-ranking, or older male characters. His extensive filmography includes a wide range of roles in television animation, original video animations, theatrical films, and dubbing for foreign productions. In television animation, his many roles included Colonel d'Agout in The Rose of Versailles in 1979. In 1983, he voiced Night in the series Document Taiyou no Kiba Dougram. He played the roles of both Nack la Wang and Wang in the 1993 series The Irresponsible Captain Tylor. In 2001, he was the voice of the Cafe TOMBO Manager in Kaze no Yojimbo, and the character Toto in One Piece. He voiced Porte in the 2004 series Mujin Wakusei Survive and in the same year began his role as Captain General Yamamoto Genryusai Shigekuni in Bleach. He also played Kiichirō Kimiyoshi in the Higurashi no Naku Koroni series and its sequel, and Kanshichiro Yagmal in Baccano! in 2007. His work in original video animations included roles such as Barney in Crusher Joe in 1989 and General Larkinson in Armored Trooper Votoms: Pailsen Files in 2007. In theatrical animation, his credits included the SSE Captain in Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack in 1988 and Watatsumi in Legend of the Millennium Dragon in 2011.
Beyond anime, Tsukada was highly active in dubbing foreign films and television series. He provided the Japanese voice for numerous actors in productions such as 24, Clear and Present Danger, The Sopranos, and Waterworld. His work also extended to video games, where he voiced Gol Acheron in the Japanese version of Jak and Daxter. Throughout his career, he was married to fellow voice actress Masako Nozawa.
