Sue Ulu
Description
Sue Ulu is an American voice actress known for her work in English dubs of anime series produced by ADV Films during the 1990s. Her full name is Suhendan "Sue" Ulu, and she was born on October 28, 1963, in Houston, Texas. Prior to her voice acting career, she was an officer in the United States Navy.
Ulu began her voice acting career in the early 1990s, specializing in English dubs for anime properties licensed by ADV Films. Her work during this period made her a recognizable voice in the industry for fans of anime distributed in North America at that time. Before relocating, she also performed in stage theater productions in the Houston area.
One of her most prominent and enduring roles was as Dr. Ritsuko Akagi in the original ADV English dub of the seminal series Neon Genesis Evangelion. She reprised this role for the related films, including Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death and Rebirth and The End of Evangelion. Another significant early role was voicing Kei in the Dirty Pair Flash OVA series. As requested, Ulu also provided the English voice for the character Manami Shibata in the OAV series Rei Rei.
Her other anime voice credits from this period include roles in a wide range of series. She voiced Big Momma in Sorcerer Hunters, Ayuko Hayami in Golden Boy, and Yaobikuni in Blue Seed. She also had roles in Burn Up W, Gasaraki, and provided additional voices for Martian Successor Nadesico. Her work extended beyond animation to include voice work for the live-action film Gamera: Guardian of the Universe.
Given her extensive work with ADV Films, she frequently collaborated with many other voice actors and staff from the Houston-based talent pool, including Tiffany Grant, Matt Greenfield, Amanda Winn, and Spike Spencer, who were also regulars in ADV productions of the era.
In 1999, Ulu moved to Los Angeles to further pursue her acting career in both film and live theater. Her voice acting credits became sparse after the early 2000s, with her last listed roles around 2004. During her active years, she was a guest at several anime conventions, including Anime Expo in 2001 and 2002, Fanime in 2002, and AniMagic in 2002 and 2003.
In a rare 2022 interview, Ulu reflected on her time as a voice actress, stating that she retired from the industry because she "didn't want to be poor." She also mentioned that she was never contacted to reprise her role as Ritsuko Akagi for any subsequent Evangelion projects.
