Andrew Rannells
Description
Andrew Rannells is an American actor and singer recognized for his extensive work as a voice actor in numerous English-language anime dubs produced by 4Kids Entertainment during the late 1990s and early 2000s. His career in anime voice acting began after he performed in the stage musical Pokémon Live!, where he played the character James from Team Rocket, a production that featured several other individuals involved in the 4Kids dubbing wing.
During his tenure at 4Kids, Rannells contributed voices to a wide array of series. He voiced the title character Tama in the English adaptation of Tama and Friends. In the series Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, he provided the voice for the character Chief Bookem, taking over the role from Jerry Lobozzo for episodes 76 through 100. He is also credited with voicing the character Cloaked Nightmare in the same series. Among his other notable roles in anime dubs are Connor in Cubix: Robots for Everyone, Len Tao in Shaman King, Fried Ricer in Fighting Foodons, Jack in Funky Cops, Bokkun, Decoe, and the Narrator in Sonic X, and several characters in the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise, including Noah Kaiba, Mako Tsunami, and Leon von Schroeder. He also voiced the young Roronoa Zoro in the 4Kids adaptation of One Piece and the character Dren in Mew Mew Power.
Beyond individual voice roles, Rannells took on additional responsibilities in production, serving as a voice director for the English adaptations of both Sonic X and Kirby: Right Back At Ya!. His career in anime voice acting was part of a broader period working on various animated projects for 4Kids, which also included voicing Archie Andrews in Archie's Weird Mysteries. His time with 4Kids concluded around 2006 when most of the original voice cast was replaced following a change in the company handling the English dub of the Pokémon series. Following his departure from consistent anime voice work, Rannells transitioned to a highly successful career in stage and screen, originating the lead role of Elder Price in the Broadway musical The Book of Mormon.
