Akira Emoto

Description
Akira Emoto is a highly regarded Japanese actor with a career spanning several decades, who has also contributed significantly to anime and animation as a voice actor. Born in Tokyo on November 3, 1948, Emoto initially pursued a different path, working at a trading company after high school before his passion for acting led him to leave and seek opportunities in the entertainment industry. He honed his craft by joining acting classes and, in 1977, co-founded the theater group Tokyo Denki Kōden (Tokyo Dry Battery), which became a foundational part of his career in live performance. His early national recognition came not from acting, but as a时事评论主持人 (current events commentary host) on the Fuji Television program "Hoho haha warai," which made him a household name. Throughout his career, Emoto has been a prolific and celebrated figure in Japanese film and television, winning numerous accolades such as the Japan Academy Film Prize for Best Actor for his role in "Kanzo sensei" (Dr. Akagi) and a Mainichi Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in "Zatoichi". This extensive live-action work forms the bedrock of his reputation for扎实 (solid) and传神 (vivid) acting.

In the realm of voice acting, Emoto brings this same depth and experience to his animated roles. One of his most prominent voice roles is as the narrator for the long-running anime series Furusato Meguri Nippon no Mukashi Banashi (Folktales from Japan). In this series, which adapts traditional Japanese folktales, myths, and legends, Emoto, alongside actress Yoneko Matsukane, provides the narration and voices for all the characters, effectively serving as the sole storyteller for the entire anthology. His involvement was announced when the series premiered on TV Tokyo in April 2012, highlighting his status as a distinguished film actor bringing his talents to the project.

Another notable voice role is in the 2009 animated film Yona Yona Penguin, where he voices the character Jii. Produced by the renowned studio Madhouse, the film tells the fantasy story of a young girl named Coco who ventures into a subterranean world. Emoto's performance as Jii is part of a cast that includes other notable voice actors such as Ichirō Nagai and Mami Koyama. He also provided the voice for Dokumo in the series Konchū Monogatari Mitsubachi Hutch - Yūki no Melody, demonstrating his range in taking on varied character types.

Beyond these specific roles, Emoto's voice acting filmography shows a pattern of lending his distinguished voice to a variety of animated projects. He has voiced characters in other prominent films, such as the grandfather in Masaaki Yuasa's Lu Over the Wall and the narrator in The Life of Budori Gusuko. He also took on the live-action role of the Saibancho (Judge) in the film adaptation of the popular video game Ace Attorney, further showcasing his involvement in projects that bridge different facets of Japanese popular culture. His voice acting work, while a facet of his larger career, is consistently marked by the same professionalism and skill that defines his extensive and award-winning work in live-action film and theater.
