Description
After the Shimabara Rebellion, in which tens of thousands of peasants were slaughtered, their leader Shiro Amakusa rises from hell. Driven by vengeance for his fallen comrades, he seeks to overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate. To achieve this, he employs a forbidden demonic technique known as Makai Tensho, or demonic transmigration, which allows him to resurrect the spirits of history's most formidable warriors and bind them to his will.
The story is set in Japan's early Edo period, a time of relative peace under the Tokugawa rule. Amakusa assembles an undead army of legendary swordsmen, including the peerless Miyamoto Musashi, the spear master Hozoin Inshun, and the skilled Araki Mataemon. Each resurrected warrior retains their prodigious combat skills but now serves Amakusa's dark purpose. Among those brought back are also the treacherous Yagyu Munenori and the lord Tokugawa Yorinobu, who become pawns in Amakusa's scheme.
Opposing this supernatural threat is the one-armed swordsman Yagyu Jubei Mitsuyoshi, a legendary figure in his own right. Jubei must confront not only the resurrected dead but also the possibility that his own father, Yagyu Munenori, has been corrupted. Alongside allies such as the Christian woman Clara Oshina, Jubei fights to stop Amakusa's army from plunging the land into chaos. The narrative follows Jubei's journey as he battles each resurrected master, culminating in a final confrontation with Amakusa himself. Themes of betrayal, the cost of vengeance, and the struggle between human will and demonic influence drive the plot forward.
