Description
O-Hiro is a young woman from the Kishū domain whose family belongs to the martial tradition of the region. She is the daughter of Sekiguchi Jūshin, one of the three celebrated master swordsmen of Kishū known as the three masters, and she is raised within that swordsmanship household. Along with Onui and Ohina, the daughters or granddaughters of the other two masters, she is kept at the Yagyū village before being summoned to Wakayama by Tokugawa Yorinobu, the lord of the Kishū domain. Yorinobu takes a liking to the three young women and selects them as candidates to become shinobi-tai, living vessels intended to serve as the bodies through which dead warriors are reborn by the forbidden ritual of Makai Tenshō. Because the ritual requires the body of a living woman, this selection places O-Hiro and the others in serious danger.
In the story of Samurai Resurrection, O-Hiro is abducted to be used as a sacrifice for this secret art. Her kidnapping is the event that draws the swordsman Yagyū Jūbei and his companions into the fight, as they pursue the abductors and battle the resurrected warriors of the Demon Realm in order to save her. Her role is therefore largely defined by her vulnerability as a target for the ritual rather than by any active part she takes in the conflict, and her personal motivation is not a major element of the story. She has no combat abilities of her own; her significance comes from her body being needed for the resurrection magic.
Her key relationships are with the other two chosen young women, Onui and Ohina, who share her fate as candidates for the ritual, and with Yagyū Jūbei, whose determination to rescue her places her at the center of the struggle. The story shows little of her inner life or development; she functions mainly as an innocent whose peril motivates the protagonist. In some versions of the tale she is depicted as having a handsome, sharp-featured beauty, with long hair falling in two strands at the front and tied in the back. The game adaptation of the story presents her as the heroine who must be rescued, and in that version she and Ohina are portrayed as twin sisters.
