Akiko Sekine
Description
Akiko Sekine was a Japanese voice actress and narrator born on October 5 in Tokyo. A graduate of the Aoni Juku Tokyo School's 6th term, she began her career in the mid-1980s and was active until 2025. She was affiliated with Aoni Production for much of her career before moving to RME in April 2020. Sekine was married to fellow voice actor Hidekatsu Shibata for over thirty years.
Sekine was known for her calm and gentle vocal quality, often portraying kind and motherly characters. One of her most prominent and enduring roles was as the shy, bookish Mio Kisaragi in the beloved Konami dating simulation game Tokimeki Memorial, first released in 1994. She reprised the role of Mio Kisaragi for subsequent game sequels, OVA appearances, and related CD dramas and vocal albums for over a decade. Another of her notable early game roles was as the initial voice of Mami Katou in the 1992 game Graduation ~Graduation~. Her video game career also included roles such as Haruko Koyama in the sound novel Kamaitachi no Yoru, Wise in Blue Breaker Burst, and Alma in Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim.
In anime, her roles included Shizuko Hiramatsu in Aoki Densetsu Shoot! and the Spring Goddess and Ondine in the 1989 television series Mahōtsukai Sally. She also appeared in Eien no Filena and guest roles in series like Getter Robo Go and Tekkaman Blade. Beyond character voice work, Sekine had a prolific and long-standing career as a narrator. She provided narration for numerous television programs, including segments on news shows such as NHK News Good Morning Japan and FNN Supernews, as well as for documentaries, commercials, and corporate instructional videos. Sekine passed away on August 1, 2025, after battling cancer.
