Anne Kerylen
Description
Anne Kerylen, born Michèle Élise Louise Louchart on December 6, 1943, in Lille, France, and passing away on March 23, 2021, in Ville-d'Avray, was a renowned French actress who became a pivotal figure in the world of voice dubbing. Her path to this career was a unique blend of academic pursuit and artistic passion. Initially, she followed her parents' wishes by studying literature at the University of Lille to become a teacher of French, Latin, and Greek. However, her deep-seated love for the theatre, nurtured from adolescence when she staged her first play, led her to simultaneously attend the city's conservatory, where she graduated with honors. After a period of teaching and pursuing theatre on an amateur basis, she ultimately left education to fully embrace an artistic career, moving to Paris after securing a television role.
Beginning in 1978, Kerylen shifted her focus primarily to dubbing, a field in which she would leave an indelible mark. She quickly became a familiar voice to French audiences, not only through her work in animation but also for her prolific dubbing of actresses in numerous successful American live-action series such as Drôles de dames (Charlie's Angels), La Petite Maison dans la prairie (Little House on the Prairie), and Dynastie (Dynasty). Her voice became synonymous with many iconic characters across genres.
In the realm of anime, Kerylen was particularly celebrated for her portrayals of strong, often aristocratic or cunning characters. She is well-known for voicing Clio in the classic space opera Albator, le corsaire de l'espace. Among her most significant roles are those in the series Anime Sanjushi, known in French as Sous le signe des Mousquetaires. In this adaptation of The Three Musketeers, she took on the key roles of the narrator, the manipulative Milady, and Queen Anne of Austria, showcasing her remarkable vocal range. She also voiced the Comtesse du Barry in Lady Oscar and Marie-Antoinette in La Tulipe noire.
Kerylen's work extended across several other anime series dubbed in France during the 1980s. In the series Lady Lady!!, she provided the voice for the character Baronne de Wilbbury. She was also heavily featured in the sports anime Attacker You!, known in French as Jeanne et Serge, where she voiced multiple characters including Marie Takigawa, Mme Tajima, Monia Takami, and Oki Samoto. Her other animation credits include roles in Gwendoline, Sophie et Virginie, and as Elita-One in the French version of Transformers.
Beyond her on-screen voice work, Anne Kerylen was also an accomplished artistic director, supervising the French dubbing for various productions. Notably, she directed the dubbing for the very series Sous le signe des Mousquetaires, in which she also starred. Her direction credits include the French dub of the animated film Le Noël de Mickey and the series Jackie Chan. Her decades of work made her a respected and essential figure in the French dubbing industry, leaving behind a rich legacy of performances that spanned live-action television, film, and a vast array of beloved animated series.
