Akiko Tsuboi is a Japanese voice actress and actress born on January 1, 1937, in Shizuoka Prefecture. She is affiliated with Aoni Production. Her career in voice acting began in the late 1960s and she remained active in the industry for several decades. Tsuboi's filmography is extensive, with many of her roles being in anime television series and films produced during the 1970s and 1980s. She was frequently cast in roles of mothers, narrators, and supporting characters. One of her earliest and most recognized roles was as Kankichi in the first anime adaptation of Fujio Akatsuka's Himitsu no Akko-chan, which aired from 1969 to 1970. She also voiced the character Chieko in the 1971 series Apache Yakyugun. Throughout her career, Tsuboi contributed to numerous classic and long-running anime franchises. She had roles in the Space Battleship Yamato series, providing the voice for Akiko Kodai. In the Leiji Matsumoto universe, she voiced Kanae Hoshino, the mother of the protagonist Tetsuro Hoshino, in both the Galaxy Express 999 television series and its film adaptations. She also played the role of Artemis's Mother in the 1980 TV special Galaxy Express 999: Can You Love Like a Mother?. Her other notable works include roles in Captain Harlock as Commander Cleo, and in the Saint Seiya franchise as Natassia, the mother of Hyoga. She also appeared in the original 1968 GeGeGe no Kitarō series as Mrs. Yamada. Tsuboi also took part in renowned animated films by major directors. She voiced the mother of Asbel and Lastelle in Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and Nadia Ronah in Mobile Suit Gundam F91. Her collaborations with Toei Animation were frequent throughout her career. Beyond animation, Tsuboi also worked as a narrator for several series, such as in the World Masterpiece Theater productions 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother and Rascal the Raccoon.
