Ayumi Tachihara

Description
Ayumi Tachihara is a Japanese manga artist and original creator whose career has been marked by a notable ability to work across multiple publishing demographics. Born on November 27, 1946, in Chiba Prefecture, Tachihara began creating manga that would find success in shōjo, josei, shōnen, and seinen markets, a range that distinguishes the creator within the industry.

Tachihara is credited as the original author for the anime Maji! and the anime Jingi, two works that exemplify the creator’s long-standing presence in the medium. The manga Maji! was established in 1986, serving as an early notable work. The series Jingi, written and illustrated by Tachihara, became a defining project, serialized in Akita Shoten’s Young Champion magazine. The original Jingi manga ran from 1988 to 2002 and was collected into 33 tankōbon volumes. This series was adapted into a two-episode original video animation released between 1991 and 1992, as well as a live-action film in 1991.

The Jingi property expanded considerably over the decades, becoming a signature series for the creator. A sequel titled JingiS ran from 2006 to 2012, followed by another sequel, Jingi Zero, which serialized from 2012 until October 2017. Two additional spin-off works, Jingi Before and Jingi After, were published in January 2020. Collectively, the Jingi series and its related sequels have achieved significant commercial success, with over 30 million copies in circulation.

Throughout the career, the creator’s body of work has demonstrated a versatility that spans demographic categories. Early one-shots and short series were positioned in the shōjo market, while Sakuranbo Monogatari represented a foray into josei. In addition to Jingi, which falls into the seinen category, the creator also produced work for the shōnen market with Maji!. This range across different publishing segments, alongside the sustained multi-decade run of a single franchise like Jingi, underscores the creator’s broad appeal and enduring significance in the manga and anime industries.
