He is most widely recognized as the English voice of Rock Lee, a beloved character from the Naruto series. Donovan first voiced the role in the original Naruto anime and reprised it consistently across all subsequent installments, including Naruto: Shippuden, the spin-off series Rock Lee & His Ninja Pals, and the sequel series Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. Beyond these hallmark roles, Donovan has contributed his voice to a variety of other anime series. His credits from this era include playing Tony Goodman in Flint the Time Detective, Yutaro Tsukayama in Rurouni Kenshin, and minor roles in series such as Vampire Princess Miyu and The Zeta Project. He also provided the voice of Salty in the animated film Alpha and Omega and its sequel.

Throughout his career, Donovan has frequently collaborated with a core group of Los Angeles-based voice actors, many of whom were also central to the casts of Naruto and Digimon. According to voice acting database records, his most frequent collaborators include Dave Wittenberg, Kate Higgins, Maile Flanagan, Steve Blum, and Yuri Lowenthal.
