Yuiko Tokumi
Description
Yuiko Tokumi is a Japanese manga artist, illustrator, and doujin artist known for creating the original works behind the anime series Bottle Fairy and Slow Start. Born on December 10, 1971, Tokumi has been active in the industry since 1987, when she began submitting work to Fanroad magazine. In the early 1990s, she started her long-running doujin circle, Mint House, initially creating BL works before shifting focus to series such as Saki. Her professional career in commercial manga began in 2002 with a guest piece in Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara, followed by her first serialized work, Bottle Fairy, which launched later that year in Enterbrain's Magi-Cu PREMIUM magazine. Bottle Fairy was adapted into an anime that premiered in October 2003, establishing Tokumi as a creator whose work could successfully transition to the screen. During this early period, she also contributed character designs for the video game Iris: The Iris Flower Story in 2003.
Tokumi's most prominent work is the four-panel yonkoma manga Slow Start, which began serialization in Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara in June 2013. The series follows Hana Ichinose, a teenager who enters high school a year late due to illness and keeps this fact secret from her new friends, blending slice-of-life comedy with gentle emotional conflict and themes of personal growth. Slow Start received a twelve-episode anime adaptation produced by CloverWorks, which aired from January to March 2018. The series has been compiled into multiple tankōbon volumes and remains ongoing as of recent years.
As an artist, Tokumi is recognized for a soft aesthetic and a focus on moe or cute daily life themes. Her character designs often feature large eyes and youthful figures, with a style that has been compared to that of other creators in the slice-of-life genre. Beyond her commercial serializations, Tokumi continues to be active in the doujin community, and she also contributed an ending card illustration for the Slow Start anime. Her career demonstrates a consistent commitment to gentle, character-driven stories that resonate with audiences seeking comforting and humorous narratives, and she holds a distinct place among creators working within the Kirara brand of manga magazines.
