Jack Grimes
Description
Jack Grimes was an American actor whose extensive career in radio, television, and voice work made him a notable figure in the early days of English-dubbed anime. He is recognized for his voice roles in classic Japanese animated features, including the character Pierre in The Wonderful World of Puss 'n Boots and Crosby in the English version of Jack and the Beanstalk.
Grimes began his career as a child actor, appearing on Broadway and in numerous radio programs from a young age. This early start provided him with a strong foundation in vocal performance. His transition into television and voice acting eventually led to a significant collaboration with fellow actor and director Peter Fernandez. In the 1960s, Fernandez recruited Grimes to provide voices for the English adaptations of several Japanese animated series and films being brought to the American market. This partnership placed Grimes at the forefront of introducing anime to Western audiences.
His most iconic anime role came in 1967 with the series Speed Racer, where he voiced the characters Sparky, the loyal mechanic, and Chim-Chim, the pet chimpanzee. This work was followed by other prominent dubbing roles in feature films. In the 1969 Toei Animation film The Wonderful World of Puss 'n Boots, Grimes voiced the young protagonist Pierre, a kind-hearted peasant boy who dreams of adventure. Several years later, in the 1974 film Jack and the Beanstalk, he provided the uncredited English voice for the character Crosby, a mouse companion to the story's hero.
Throughout his voice acting career, Grimes frequently collaborated with a consistent group of voice actors who worked on the English adaptations of Japanese anime. This team, assembled by Peter Fernandez, often included performers such as Corinne Orr, Billie Lou Watt, and Ray Owens, with whom Grimes worked on projects like Puss 'n Boots and Jack and the Beanstalk. While his role as Pierre is a central part of his anime legacy, his portrayal of the cheerful mechanic Sparky in Speed Racer remains one of his most enduring and widely recognized achievements, cementing his place in the history of English-dubbed animation.
