Carlo Romano

Description
Carlo Romano was an Italian actor and voice actor, born in Livorno, Italy, on 8 May 1908, who became one of the most prominent and recognizable voices in Italian dubbing during the mid-twentieth century. He began his career on stage in 1927 and later expanded into radio, film, and television, appearing in nearly one hundred films between 1934 and 1975. Romano was also active as a screenwriter, contributing to fourteen films.

Romano's primary legacy lies in his extensive dubbing work. He was the official Italian voice for renowned comedians such as Jerry Lewis, Bob Hope, and Lou Costello, and he also dubbed performances by actors like Louis de Funès, Fred Astaire, James Cagney, Peter Lorre, and Ernest Borgnine. One of his most celebrated roles was providing the Italian voice for French actor Fernandel in the popular Don Camillo film series. In addition to live-action dubbing, he was a prolific voice artist for animated films. For Italian audiences, he voiced classic Disney characters including Jiminy Cricket in Pinocchio, the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland, and the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood.

In the context of anime and Japanese animation dubbed into Italian, Romano voiced roles in Toei Animation's feature films. He is noted for providing the Italian voice for the character Pero in the 1969 film The Wonderful World of Puss 'n Boots. He also voiced the character of the Mayor in the 1972 sequel, Nagagutsu Sanjūshi, also known as The Three Musketeers in Boots. These roles connect him to the world of anime dubbing during the period when Japanese animated films were being localized for Italian audiences.

Romano was part of a large family involved in performing arts. He was the son of actress Dina Romano and the brother of actor Felice Romano. Through his marriage to actress Jone Romano, he became the stepfather of actor Aleardo Ward and step-grandfather to voice actors Luca, Andrea, and Monica Ward. Carlo Romano died in Rome on 16 October 1975 at the age of 67.
