Newton da Matta was a renowned Brazilian actor and voice actor, widely regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of dubbing in Brazil. Born Newton Marin da Matta in Rio de Janeiro on February 14, 1934, he began his artistic career at the age of eleven on radio, working for prominent stations such as Rádio Tupi, Rádio Mayrink Veiga, and Rádio Nacional do Rio de Janeiro. His work in radio included roles as a radio actor, novela writer, and casting director. He also had a background in theater, being the first actor to play Pedrinho in a theatrical adaptation of Sítio do Pica-Pau Amarelo, and later directed the musical Alô Dolly.
Da Matta entered the dubbing industry in the early 1960s after being invited by Herbert Richers to work at his studio, Herbert Richers, where he worked exclusively for four decades. In addition to voicing characters, he also served as a dubbing director, contributing to the Brazilian Portuguese versions of numerous films and television series.
His extensive voice work included many notable roles in animated series and anime. Among his most recognized are Lion-O in the animated series Thundercats, a role for which he also directed the dubbing. He also voiced the character Basil in the Disney film The Great Mouse Detective. Within the anime genre specifically, he is known for his work as Dr. Armstrong in the series Voltes V and as Homer in Star Blazers: The Bolar Wars, as well as other entries in the Star Blazers franchise.
Da Matta was particularly celebrated for being the official Portuguese voice of actors Bruce Willis and Dustin Hoffman for over two decades. His other live-action dubbing credits include providing voices for Terence Hill, Paul Newman, and Richard Chamberlain, among many others.
In his later career, he worked as a director at the Tempo Filmes studio in São Paulo. He was posthumously nominated for Best Supporting Voice Actor at the 2006 Yamato Award, often called the "Oscar of Dubbing" in Brazil, for his work on the series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Newton da Matta passed away on March 6, 2006, in Bragança Paulista, São Paulo.
