Description
Giancarlo Padoan was an Italian voice actor, primarily active in dubbing foreign productions into Italian, with a prolific career that spanned several decades up until his death in 2022. He was born in Venice, Italy, on May 4, 1935, and passed away in Rome on November 28, 2022, at the age of 87. Padoan was the grandfather of fellow voice actresses Eva Padoan and Erica Intoppa.

His extensive body of work is characterized by a high volume of voice roles in animated series and films, particularly in the dubbing of anime for the Italian market. He provided the Italian voice for a vast array of characters across many notable Japanese series. Among his most recognized roles are Mushin and the swordsmith Totosai in the long-running series Inuyasha, as well as its third feature film. He also voiced Colonel in Ashita no Joe 2, Larry Randolph in Armitage III and its film Armitage III: Poly-Matrix, and Geary in City Hunter 3.

In animation aimed at a broader audience, Padoan voiced Rowlf the dog on the Italian dubbing of The Muppet Show, and in later Muppet projects, he took over as the voice of Statler. His work also extended to western animation, such as voicing Thirty-Thirty in BraveStarr and Optimus Prime in the 1989 Italian edition of The Transformers: The Movie.

Padoan collaborated on numerous projects directed by Gualtiero Cannarsi, who oversaw the Italian dubbing for several Studio Ghibli films. A key example of this collaboration is the film Whisper of the Heart, where Padoan voiced the character of Shirou Nishi, the elderly antiques shop owner, in the 2011 Italian edition produced by Tecnocolor. Another of the user's cited examples, Phantom Quest Corp., also features Padoan in the role of Rokkon.

His filmography demonstrates recurring work within the industry, lending his voice to numerous Toei Animation and Sunrise productions. This includes roles such as Iron Mask in Mazinger Z, Commander Death Sander in The Unbeatable Daitarn 3, Professor Kyotaro Otaki and Saxidaras in Gordian, and Professor Torii in I-Zenborg. He also voiced Ramba Ral in the second Italian edition of Mobile Suit Gundam and its film trilogy, as well as Melanin Hukebin in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam.

Padoan's notable achievements lie in the sheer volume and breadth of his contributions to Italian dubbing, making him a familiar voice to generations of viewers of animated content. His work helped define the Italian-language versions of many classic and contemporary anime series. His passing in 2022 marked the end of a significant career in the Italian dubbing industry.
