María Massip
Description
María Massip was a Spanish actress widely recognized for her extensive work in dubbing, lending her voice to numerous international stars for Spanish-language versions of films. One of her early notable roles in Spanish television was playing Mary March in the 1964 television adaptation of Little Women, titled Mujercitas, as part of the classic series Novela on TVE.
Born in Albacete, Spain in 1942, Massip trained at the conservatory of dramatic arts and the Official School of Cinema, making her theatrical debut at the age of seventeen. Her career spanned both on-screen and voice acting, becoming a familiar face on Spanish television throughout the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s in programs such as Estudio 1, Novela, and Historias para no dormir. Her film appearances included roles in Canción de cuna, La herida luminosa, and El abuelo, all directed by José Luis Garci, as well as the film Colorín colorado, for which she won the CEC Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1976.
However, Massip was most celebrated for her career as a dubbing actress, where her voice was highly sought after for its expressiveness, perfect diction, and versatility, allowing her to move between drama, comedy, and more cynical characters. She is perhaps best remembered as the Spanish voice of Ingrid Bergman in the television version of Casablanca. She also regularly dubbed actresses such as Glenn Close, Stephanie Beacham, Lauren Bacall, Sofia Loren, Jacqueline Bisset, and Rita Hayworth in numerous films. Her dubbing work included films like Dangerous Liaisons, La dolce vita, and the television series Falcon Crest and Dynasty, where she was the voice for Stephanie Beacham's character, Sable Colby. Massip continued working until her final years, with her career drawing to a close around 1998 due to a neurological disorder. She passed away in Madrid in 2002.
