Kei Sasuga

Description
Kei Sasuga is a Japanese manga artist best known as the creator of the romantic drama series Domestic Girlfriend. Born on October 6, 1981, in Aomori Prefecture, her real name is Keiko Sasaki, and she uses Kei Sasuga as her professional pen name. Early in her career, she worked as an assistant to Takeshi Hinata, the creator of Dream Team. Initially uncertain about pursuing manga professionally, she kept it as a hobby while attending design school. After completing her education, she decided to fully dedicate herself to becoming a manga artist to avoid future regrets.

Sasuga made her serialization debut with GE: Good Ending, which was published in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine. The series began with a one-shot chapter in April 2009 and ran as a full serial from August 2009 to January 2013, spanning 16 tankōbon volumes. The story follows high school student Seiji Utsumi as he navigates his feelings for two different classmates, a premise that established her focus on complex romantic entanglements.

Her most prominent work, Domestic Girlfriend, was serialized in the same magazine from April 2014 to June 2020, concluding with 28 volumes. The plot centers on Natsuo Fujii, a high school student who is in love with his teacher, Hina. After a casual encounter with a girl named Rui Tachibana, his life becomes extraordinarily complicated when his father announces his intention to remarry, and the daughters of his fiancée are revealed to be Hina and Rui, making them his new step-sisters. The manga was adapted into a 12-episode anime television series produced by studio Diomedéa, which aired from January to March 2019. An English-language version of the manga was released digitally by Kodansha USA.

Following the conclusion of Domestic Girlfriend, Sasuga launched a new series titled Issho ni Kurashite Ii desu ka? (Can I Live With You?) in 2023, published in Shueisha's Grand Jump Mucha magazine. The story shifts to a share-house setting and explores romantic comedy dynamics among adult characters. She has also produced several one-shot works, including Medicine (2013), Gokumane! (2021), Tokyo GhostBros (2021), Kanojo to Boku no End Roll (2021), and Couple Gaihi desu!! (2022).

Sasuga's artistic identity is defined by romantic drama that often incorporates mature themes and emotional intensity. Her stories typically feature love triangles and complex interpersonal relationships, frequently exploring the boundaries of social norms. She has stated that each character in Domestic Girlfriend contains a little bit of her own personality, with protagonist Natsuo Fujii reflecting some of her own traits. She also noted that by the time she reached the eighth volume of that series, she had already decided on the ending and created blueprints for the final panels. Her work addresses topics such as drugs, gangs, and sex positivity, and she has expressed particular fondness for supporting characters who help explore these niche subjects. Kei Sasuga remains an active creator in the manga industry, continuing to publish new work while her previous series maintain a dedicated readership.
