Lauro Fabiano
Description
Lauro Fabiano was a seminal Brazilian voice actor and dubbing director, whose career spanned seven decades and left an indelible mark on the animation and anime industry in Brazil. Born on July 12, 1937, in Rio de Janeiro, he began his dubbing career at the young age of 16 in 1953, providing the Portuguese voice for the title character in Disney's Peter Pan.
Fabiano is recognized as a pioneer in the dubbing of anime in Brazil, having lent his voice to protagonists in some of the very first Japanese animated series to be broadcast in the country. He famously voiced the titular cyborg hero, Oitavo Homem (Rachiro Azuma), in the classic series 8 Man, which premiered on Brazilian television in 1968. His other landmark anime role from this pioneering era was Randy Carter, one of the three alien protagonists in Os Três Espaciais (Wonder Three), a 1969 production for which he also served as the dubbing director. His involvement with classic anime extended to roles such as Professor Kozumi in the first Brazilian dub of Cyborg 009 and as the narrator for the initial dubbing of Speed Racer.
Beyond his work as a voice actor, Fabiano was a highly respected dubbing director. His directorial work was recognized with the prestigious Prêmio Yamato, also known as the Oscar da Dublagem, in 2004 for his direction on the film Spirited Away (A Viagem de Chihiro). His vocal talent also brought to life characters in other notable anime-influenced or Japanese productions, such as Laughton in the film Metropolis and Shane Gooseman in the American-Japanese series Galaxy Rangers.
While foundational to anime in Brazil, Fabiano's voice became widely recognized by the general public for his numerous roles in Western animation and live-action series. He was the long-time Portuguese voice of Tio Phil (Phillip Banks) on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Professor Alvo Dumbledore in seven of the eight Harry Potter films. His extensive filmography also includes being one of the voices of Mr. Burns on The Simpsons, Anton Ego in Ratatouille, and various characters in the Transformers franchise. Lauro Fabiano passed away on June 1, 2023, at the age of 85, leaving behind a legacy as one of Brazil's most prolific and cherished voice acting talents.
