Kairi Shimotsuki

Description
Kairi Shimotsuki, also known by the Japanese name霜月かいり (Shimotsuki Kairi), is a Japanese manga artist and illustrator. She was born on November 14, though the specific year of her birth has not been publicly documented. Her career as a creator spans a wide range of genres, from boys' love to historical action, and she is best known as the original creator of the manga series Brave10, which was adapted into an anime television series.

Shimotsuki began her professional career as a creator of boys' love manga, which focuses on romantic relationships between male characters. Among her early works in this genre are titles such as Inferior Doll, Heaven's Love, and the two-volume series Madness, which combines elements of a post-apocalyptic setting with the dynamics of romantic drama and violent action. Madness was later licensed for an English-language release in North America.

Her artistic identity is characterized by a significant shift in focus from original boys' love stories to historical action narratives. A notable turning point in her career was her work on the licensed manga adaptation of the popular video game franchise Sengoku Basara. She authored Sengoku Basara: Ranse Ranbu, which allowed her to develop her skills in depicting the action-packed, warring states period of Japanese history. This experience directly led to the creation of her most famous original work, Brave10.

The Brave10 series is a reimagining of the legendary story of the Sanada Ten Braves, a group of ten ninja and warriors who served the warlord Sanada Yukimura during the Sengoku period. The original manga, simply titled Brave10, was serialized in Media Factory's seinen manga magazine Comic Flapper from 2006 to December 2010 and was compiled into eight volumes. The story proved popular enough to warrant a continuation. From June 15, 2011, to March 2016, Shimotsuki published a second part titled Brave10 S (also known as Brave10 Spiral) in the shoujo magazine Monthly Comic Gene. This sequel series ran for ten volumes.

The success of the original Brave10 manga led to its adaptation into a twelve-episode anime television series, which aired from January to March 2012. The animation was produced by Studio Sakimakura with production by TMS Entertainment. In this context, Kairi Shimotsuki is officially credited as the original creator, providing the source material and story foundation for the anime.

Beyond Brave10, Shimotsuki has demonstrated her range by creating manga adaptations of other existing properties. She illustrated the manga adaptation of the mystery novel The Perfect Insider (Subete ga F ni Naru) and created the manga titled Thunderbolt Fantasy: Otome Genyuki, a spin-off of the Taiwanese puppet-driven series Thunderbolt Fantasy. Her other original works include Death Edge, the supernatural series Makai Ishi Mephisto (魔界医師メフィスト), the fantasy series Nightmare Express, and Date Bashira. Her one-volume work, A Century of Temptation, was also licensed for an English release in North America by Digital Manga Publishing.

Her significance in the manga and anime industry stems from her ability to successfully transition from niche genre work to creating a mainstream historical action series that achieved international recognition and an anime adaptation. While maintaining a distinct flair for character-driven drama that carries over from her earlier works, Kairi Shimotsuki has established herself as a versatile creator capable of handling both original concepts and licensed adaptations within the Japanese media landscape.
