Yūki Suenaga
Description
Yūki Suenaga is a Japanese manga writer best known as the original creator of the series Akane-banashi. He was born on May 21, 1990, in Kumamoto Prefecture. Before becoming a manga creator, Suenaga worked as a salaryman at an advertising agency. At the age of 26, while still employed, he began submitting work to manga contests. In 2017, he won the quasi-grand prize and the character prize in the Story King Pro contest, a scriptwriting competition, for his one-shot story When You Leave the Stage, which was illustrated by Minya Hiraga and later published in Jump GIGA in 2017.
His professional debut as a manga writer came with the serialization of Akane-banashi. The series, which focuses on the world of rakugo, a traditional Japanese form of comedic storytelling, began in Weekly Shonen Jump on February 14, 2022. The manga is a collaborative work; Suenaga is credited as the original creator and writer, while Takamasa Moue is responsible for the illustrations. This was not their first collaboration, as they had previously worked together on a one-shot titled Tatarashido, published in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2021. The rakugo performances depicted in Akane-banashi are supervised by a professional rakugoka, Kikuhiko Hayashiya.
Akane-banashi has become a significant success for Suenaga, marking his first serialized work. The series has been well-received, leading to an anime television adaptation that premiered in April 2026. The story follows a teenage girl, Akane Osaki, who aspires to become a master rakugo storyteller, or shin'uchi, to avenge her father, who was unjustly expelled from the rakugo world. In comments about the anime's debut, Suenaga expressed his happiness with the adaptation and thanked fans for their support. The anime's opening theme song was performed by Keisuke Kuwata of the band Southern All Stars, who cited the series as a significant source of inspiration. Beyond Akane-banashi, Suenaga's other published works include the one-shots When You Leave the Stage, Secrets of the Galaxy, and Tatarashido.
