Yukito Ayatsuji
Description
Yukito Ayatsuji is the pen name of Naoyuki Uchida, a Japanese mystery and horror writer born on December 23, 1960, in Kyoto Prefecture. He is recognized as a seminal figure in Japanese mystery fiction, credited as one of the founders of the "new traditionalist" movement, often referred to as "shin honkaku," which sought to revive and modernize the classic rules of detective fiction with an emphasis on intricate puzzles and self-reflexive elements. His debut novel, The Decagon House Murders, published in 1987, is considered a landmark work that helped establish this movement.
Ayatsuji is the original creator of the Another series, which began as a horror mystery novel published in 2009. The story, set in a middle school class plagued by a deadly curse, spawned a successful media franchise. A manga adaptation illustrated by Hiro Kiyohara was serialized in Kadokawa Shoten's Young Ace magazine from 2010 to 2011. This manga adaptation was later published in collected volumes, with an English translation released by Yen Press in 2013. The Another series also received an anime television adaptation, further expanding its audience. The franchise continued with additional novels, including Another Episode S in 2013 and Another 2001 in 2020.
Beyond the Another franchise, Ayatsuji’s literary career is extensive and primarily rooted in novel writing. His most acclaimed body of work is the "Bizarre House/Mansion Murders" series, also known as the "House" series, a collection of nine novels published between 1987 and 2012 that feature interconnected mysteries set in architecturally unique mansions. The fourth entry in this series, The Clock House Murders, earned him the prestigious Mystery Writers of Japan Award in 1992. His other works include the Whispering series, the Blood Thirsty Killer series, the Midorogaoka series of horror short stories, and several standalone novels and short story collections. In his personal life, he is married to author Fuyumi Ono, known for The Twelve Kingdoms series.
