Description
"Another" is a mystery horror manga written by Yukito Ayatsuji and illustrated by Hiro Kiyohara, serialized from 2009 to 2012. The story is set in 1998 and revolves around the eerie events at Yomiyama North Middle School, specifically in Class 3-3. The narrative begins with Koichi Sakakibara, a transfer student who moves to the town of Yomiyama to live with his grandparents after his father’s overseas work assignment. Upon arriving, Koichi notices an unsettling atmosphere surrounding his new class, particularly directed toward a quiet, enigmatic girl named Mei Misaki, who wears an eyepatch and is seemingly ignored by her classmates.
As Koichi befriends Mei, he learns of a dark curse tied to Class 3-3. Decades earlier, a popular student named Misaki died unexpectedly during the school year. Devastated, the class and teachers pretended Misaki was still alive, even setting a desk for them and including them in class activities. At graduation, the class photo inexplicably showed Misaki’s ghostly figure, and from that year onward, Class 3-3 became plagued by a series of mysterious deaths. To mitigate the curse, the class adopts a tradition of designating a "non-existent" student—someone treated as though they are not there—to appease the curse. However, the rules surrounding this tradition are unclear, and the curse continues to claim lives.
Koichi and Mei investigate the curse, uncovering its origins and the rules governing it. They discover that the curse is tied to the "extra" person in the class—someone who is either a deceased individual or a living person unknowingly connected to the curse. As the school year progresses, the curse intensifies, leading to a series of gruesome and seemingly accidental deaths among students, teachers, and their families. The tension escalates as the class struggles to identify the "extra" person and break the curse before more lives are lost.
The story delves into themes of grief, guilt, and the consequences of denial, as the characters grapple with the curse’s origins and their own roles in perpetuating it. The narrative builds toward a climactic resolution as Koichi and Mei confront the truth behind the curse and attempt to end its cycle of death. The manga’s atmosphere is steeped in suspense and dread, with a focus on psychological horror and the unraveling of a tightly woven mystery. The characters’ interactions and the gradual revelation of the curse’s mechanics drive the plot forward, creating a tense and immersive experience.
