Junko
Description
Junko, also known by the pseudonym Clip-Clop, is a Japanese manga artist born on November 28 in Kanagawa Prefecture. She began reading and drawing yaoi fan art at a young age and made her professional debut in 2009, creating yaoi manga for various magazines. Her 2010 series Kimi Note, published in the magazine Gush, became her first breakthrough hit. In 2013, Junko launched her first shōjo series, Kiss Him, Not Me, in Kodansha's Bessatsu Friend magazine. The romantic comedy centers on a fujoshi, or female yaoi fan, who suddenly becomes the object of affection for several boys after she loses weight. Junko has credited fellow manga artist Eiki Eiki with suggesting the inclusion of jokes about fujoshi culture to make the series more comedic. Kiss Him, Not Me became a significant commercial and critical success. It won the Best Shōjo Manga award at the 40th Kodansha Manga Awards and was named one of the best shōjo series in the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! guidebook in 2015. The manga was serialized until February 2018 and compiled into fourteen tankōbon volumes. It was adapted into a twelve-episode anime television series by studio Brain's Base, which aired from October to December 2016. A live-action film adaptation was also released in July 2020. Following the conclusion of Kiss Him, Not Me, Junko began publishing the series Star-Crossed!!, also known as Wotadol: Oshi ga Watashi de Watashi ga Oshi de, in Bessatsu Friend in 2019. Her body of work includes other series such as Mr. Mini Mart, Prince of Recipe, and Under the Umbrella, With You, many of which were published in yaoi-focused magazines like Gush and Chara Selection. Junko's career is notable for her successful transition from creating yaoi manga to producing a hit shōjo series that directly engages with and humorously critiques otaku and fujoshi culture, bringing these subcultures into mainstream manga and anime. Her recognition by the Kodansha Manga Awards underscores her industry significance as a creator whose work has achieved both popular appeal and critical acclaim.
