Jiyoung Kang
Description
Jiyoung Kang, also known professionally as JY, is a South Korean actress and singer based in Japan who has built a career in both live-action and animated productions. Born on January 18, 1994, in Paju, South Korea, she first gained prominence as a member of the popular Korean girl group Kara before transitioning into a full-time acting career in Japan.
Following her departure from Kara in 2014, Kang focused on her acting pursuits in Japan, where she secured numerous roles in television dramas and films. Her early acting work in Japan included a leading role in the live-action adaptation of Jigoku Sensei Nube and a part in the drama Higanbana.
Kang's entry into voice acting began in 2015 when she was cast as a museum guide in the nineteenth Detective Conan film, Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno. This role was particularly notable as it marked her first experience with voice recording for an anime, a challenge she embraced despite initial nervousness about using Japanese in a new performance format.
Her most high-profile voice acting role to date is Harley Quinn in the 2017 anime comedy film DC Super Heroes vs. Eagle Talon. In this crossover production featuring the Justice League and a bumbling Japanese secret society, Kang provided the Japanese voice for the iconic DC Comics character, starring opposite Ken Yasuda as the Joker and Takayuki Yamada as Batman.
Beyond these credits, Kang has built an extensive filmography in live-action. She portrayed Irina Jelavic in both the Assassination Classroom live-action film and its sequel, Assassination Classroom: Graduation. Her other notable live-action roles include Yukime in Jigoku Sensei Nube, Itori in Tokyo Ghoul S, and leading parts in various Japanese television dramas. While her voice acting work is a smaller part of her overall career, her role as Harley Quinn represents a significant credit in anime and manga-related productions.
