Katsuwo
Description
Katsuwo is a Japanese manga artist whose professional career began in the early 2010s. The creator's real name and other personal biographical details are not publicly known, and they are sometimes referred to by the alternative spelling "Katsuo." Katsuwo first entered the manga industry with a spin-off of the popular mecha series Eureka Seven, titled Eureka Seven Nano, which was published from 2012 to 2013. Following this debut, Katsuwo found greater recognition by creating original comedies set in the daily lives of young girls.
Katsuwo is best known as the original creator of three manga series that have been adapted into anime television series. The first of these is Mitsuboshi Colors, which was serialized in Dengeki Daioh magazine from 2014 to 2020. This manga, which follows the mischievous everyday adventures of three young girls who call themselves the "Colors" as they patrol and protect their neighborhood in Tokyo's Ueno district, received an anime adaptation produced by the studio Silver Link that premiered in January 2018. The second major work is Hitori Bocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu, a yonkoma, or four-panel, comedy manga that was serialized from September 2013 to April 2021. The story centers on a severely shy middle school girl named Bocchi Hitori who must befriend her entire class to reunite with her only childhood friend. This series was adapted into a twelve-episode anime by studio C2C, which aired from April to June 2019. The third work to be adapted is #Zombie Sagashitemasu, also known as I'm Looking For Zombie. This manga, described as a "zombie x youth comedy," ran from June 2022 to November 2023. Set in a world where a plague has turned most of humanity into zombies, it follows a girl named Aki and her friends as they journey to find her missing father. An anime television adaptation of this series has been announced and is scheduled to premiere in 2026.
In addition to these adapted works, Katsuwo has created other manga series, including Kin No Tamago, which was serialized from 2015 to 2017, and a newer series titled Sutochiru, which began publication in 2024. A consistent element of Katsuwo's artistic identity is the focus on comedy and slice-of-life stories featuring young female protagonists with rounded, childlike, and expressive character designs. While early works like Hitori Bocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu deal with themes of social anxiety and the struggle to form friendships, later works like #Zombie Sagashitemasu show a shift by placing similar character dynamics into a post-apocalyptic zombie setting while retaining a comedic tone. Katsuwo's significance in the industry lies in the successful transition of multiple original manga from serialization in Kadokawa's Comic Dengeki Daioh "g" magazine to television, establishing a consistent presence as a creator of lighthearted, character-driven comedies that resonate with audiences.
