Shiratori Shirow

Description
Shirow Shiratori is a Japanese light novelist born in 1981 in Tajimi, Gifu Prefecture. He is the original creator behind several manga and anime adaptations, most notably the No-Rin series and The Ryuo's Work Is Never Done!. Shiratori began writing novels during his second year of university and made his professional debut in April 2008 with Rajikaru Erementsu, published by GA Bunko. He graduated from Kanazawa University with a degree in law and later completed coursework at Meijo University graduate school of law.

Shiratori is best known as the author of the light novel series No-Rin, which began publication in August 2011 with illustrations by Kippu. The series received a twelve-episode anime adaptation in 2014 and won the newly established Ranobezuki Shotenin Taishō award in 2012. The No-Rin franchise expanded into multiple manga adaptations, all credited to Shiratori as the original story author. The main manga adaptation, illustrated by Maru Asakura, was serialized in Square Enixs Young Gangan from March 2012 to June 2015 and compiled into eight volumes. A comedy-focused spin-off titled No-Rin Petit, illustrated by Kotoji, ran in Big Gangan from August 2013 to August 2014 and was collected in two volumes. Another adaptation, No-Rin Wild, also known as No-Rin Gaia, illustrated by Toshiko Machida, began serialization in GA Bunko Magazine in October 2013.

Shiratoris most commercially successful work is The Ryuo's Work Is Never Done!, a light novel series that started publication in September 2015 with illustrations by Shirabii. The series won the 28th Shōgi Pen Club Taishō Literary Club's Award of Excellence in July 2016 and received a twelve-episode anime adaptation in January 2018. Due to the series focus on professional shogi, Shiratori has occasionally served as a commentator for prominent shogi matches, and his journalism covering the decisive game of the 3rd Eiō Shōgi competition won the grand prize in the 31st Shōgi Pen Club Taishō Kanseki Division awards.

Thematically, Shiratoris works frequently blend romantic comedy with niche professional or vocational settings. No-Rin is set in an agricultural school and incorporates farming themes, while The Ryuo's Work Is Never Done! centers on the world of competitive shogi. His writing career was originally motivated by financial necessity, as he needed a job that allowed remote work while caring for family and managing tuition expenses. He initially expressed shame about being a light novel author and used a fictitious author profile with a different birth year and hometown, but later rectified this after the deaths of his mother and grandfather, stating that continuing to lie would deny the lives of the family members who raised him. Shiratori is married with one child and resides in Nagoya as of 2018.
