Tachibana Higuchi

Description
Tachibana Higuchi is a Japanese manga artist born on March 16, 1976, in Kyoto, Japan. She made her professional debut in 1996 at the age of twenty with the story 5 Gatsu no Sakura (The Cherry Blossoms of May), published in the fifth issue of the magazine Bessatsu Hana to Yume. In an interview, she explained that she began submitting manga stories after graduating from high school, having previously studied for entrance examinations to art university while drawing comics for fun. She noted that starting to draw manga seriously at a somewhat later age made her progress in storytelling and drawing techniques very fast, as she worked hard to absorb everything she could learn about the craft.

Higuchi is best known as the creator of Gakuen Alice, also known as Alice Academy, which was serialized in Hana to Yume from 2003 to 2013 and collected into thirty-one volumes. The series became one of her most successful works and received a television anime adaptation. Before Gakuen Alice, she wrote Portrait of M and N, which ran from 2000 to 2002 and spans six volumes, as well as a single-volume work titled Swan Lake published in 1999. Following the conclusion of Gakuen Alice, she created several shorter series including Letter, a one-shot released in 2014, and Anne no Magomago Tosho Land, which began serialization in Hana to Yume the same year. From 2016 to 2017, she worked on Kageki No Kuni No Alice (Alice in the Country of the Opera), a three-volume spin-off of Gakuen Alice.

Higuchi's current ongoing work is Champignon no Majo, also known as Champignon Witch, which began serialization on Hakusensha's Manga Park website on October 18, 2019. The series follows Luna, a gentle young witch who lives alone in a forest known for its poisonous mushrooms and is feared by villagers who believe she brings illness and death. As of December 2024, the manga has been compiled into six volumes. An anime television series adaptation of Champignon no Majo has been announced and is scheduled to premiere in January 2026, produced by the animation studios Typhoon Graphics and Qzil.la. The series will be directed by Yōsuke Kubo, with scripts written by Yūko Kakihara and music composed by Takeshi Hama.

The artist has stated that her interests include film appreciation, travel, stamp collecting, walking, and gardening, and that she enjoys good food,杂货, picture books, and comics. She has noted that the most rewarding part of being a manga artist is receiving letters and gifts from readers, while the most difficult aspect is meeting tight deadlines. Higuchi has been a guest at international manga events, including the Salón del Manga in Barcelona, Spain, in 2006, and she traveled to Taiwan the same year for a signing event hosted by her Taiwanese publisher. In 2012, she contributed to the first volume of the Story 311 anthology, a charitable project commemorating the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, with all proceeds going toward reconstruction efforts in the affected areas. Her work has been recommended by other notable artists, including manga creator Chica Umino and artist Yuko Higuchi. Throughout her career, Higuchi has published primarily with Hakusensha, working within the shōjo genre, and she maintains an official website at higunet.boo.jp.
