Chokkaku Shibuya

Description
Chokkaku Shibuya is a Japanese manga artist, columnist, and essayist born in Tokyo in 1975. Shibuya works across both serialized comics and regular column writing, maintaining multiple ongoing projects simultaneously.

One of Shibuya’s most recognized original works is the manga Okuda Tamio ni Naritai Boy to Deau Otoko Subete Kuruwaseru Girl, which was published as a single volume on July 23, 2015. The story follows Koroki, a 35-year-old magazine editor who models his life after Japanese singer-songwriter Tamio Okuda, and his tumultuous relationship with Akari Amami, a charismatic fashion writer who proves to be overwhelmingly disruptive to the men around her. Shibuya wrote and illustrated the manga, which was serialized in the magazine Shukan SPA! prior to its collected release.

The manga was adapted into a live-action feature film released in Japan on September 16, 2017. The film was directed by Hitoshi One, with Shibuya credited for the original manga and One handling the screenplay adaptation. The cast included Satoshi Tsumabuki as the protagonist Yuji Koroki and Kiko Mizuhara as Akari Amami. Shibuya participated in the film’s Blu-ray release, contributing an audio commentary alongside director Hitoshi One.

Beyond this work, Shibuya has maintained a consistent presence in the Japanese publishing industry as both a comics creator and a columnist. Shibuya has been credited with five ongoing manga serializations and seven regular column serializations. Shibuya’s recent published works include a sequel to the designer Naoto Shibui’s holiday series. The creator’s body of work reflects a focus on adult relationships, workplace dynamics, and character-driven romantic comedy, often exploring the gap between personal ideals and the messy realities of human interaction.
