Ellen Wong

Description
Ellen Wong is a Canadian actress whose career in film and television led to a notable entry into anime voice acting. She was born in Scarborough, Ontario, in 1985 to parents who are Chinese Cambodian and immigrated to Canada. Wong studied radio and television arts at Ryerson University and began acting professionally in the mid-2000s, with early roles in series such as This Is Wonderland. A practitioner of taekwondo and holder of a black belt, her martial arts background became a significant asset in her career.

Wong's breakout role came in 2010 with the live-action film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, in which she portrayed the high school student Knives Chau. Her performance, which involved significant fight choreography, was widely praised and established her as a rising talent. This character would become the cornerstone of her connection to anime voice acting.

Over a decade later, Wong reprised her role as Knives Chau for the 2023 Netflix anime series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. This project marked her first major experience in voice acting. In interviews, she described the process as a unique challenge, noting that she had to use her voice differently to reconnect with the character, who remained a teenager, and to find the right vocal quality for the role.

Outside of her voice work in the Scott Pilgrim anime, Wong is widely recognized for her live-action roles in television. She starred as Jill "Mouse" Chen in The CW series The Carrie Diaries and played Jenny Chey in the Netflix comedy-drama GLOW. Her role in GLOW was particularly significant, as the show's creators wrote the character's background to reflect Wong's own Cambodian heritage after extensive discussions with her. Her other television credits include recurring roles in Dark Matter, Combat Hospital, and Condor.

In film, Wong has appeared in productions such as The Circle alongside Tom Hanks and Emma Watson, the horror film The Void, and the comedy Best Sellers. Her performance in the short film Silent Cargo earned her a nomination for an ACTRA Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female in 2012.

While her voice acting credits are currently defined by her return to the world of Scott Pilgrim, this work represents a significant late-career development and a successful transition of a beloved live-action character into the animated medium. Her career is marked by a pattern of portraying strong, dynamic characters, often bringing her own cultural background and physical training to bear on her performances.
