Description
Knives Chau is a Chinese-Canadian character born in March 1987, introduced as a 17-year-old Toronto high school student. Her early life involved loneliness during elementary school. Her mother encouraged romantic pursuits, which Knives initially ignored. She met Scott Pilgrim during a bus argument, leading to a relationship that became her central focus; she self-described as a "Scottaholic."

After Scott abruptly broke up with her—initially "forgetting" to end it—Knives became bitter, jealous, and vengeful. She altered her appearance by cutting and dyeing her hair (red in comics, blue in the film) and adopted a new clothing style, partly emulating Ramona Flowers. She pursued Scott aggressively, confronting Ramona physically multiple times. She briefly dated Scott's friend Young Neil primarily to provoke jealousy.

Her character evolves differently across adaptations. In the graphic novels, she eventually reconciles with Scott and Ramona, starts college at 18, and moves past her obsession. She develops a mutual attraction with Stephen Stills, later revealed as unreciprocated.

In the film, Knives demonstrates physical prowess, saving Scott during his final battle against Gideon Graves. After initially attempting to fight Ramona, she cooperates with her in "2-player mode" to defeat Gideon using "Ninja Ninja Revolution" moves. Post-victory, she tells Scott "I’m too cool for you anyway," encourages him to pursue Ramona, and shares a final cheek kiss. An alternate ending shows Scott with Knives instead.

The animated series "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" diverges: after Scott's presumed death, Knives channels energy into music. She masters bass guitar within hours and collaborates with Stephen Stills on a musical based on Scott's life, pitching it to Matthew Patel. This marks her shift from boy-centric obsession to career ambition. Upon Scott's return, a mature breakup conversation occurs where Scott apologizes for their age-inappropriate relationship. Knives expresses gratitude for the growth space his "death" provided, solidifying her independence.

Knives possesses a petite build. Her comic eyes are drawn as simple black dots. Her appearance evolves: she initially sports a long ponytail, later adopting a short bob. Her iconic battle outfit in Volume 2 features a black sleeveless top. Her martial arts skills, highlighted in the film and game, position her as evenly matched with Ramona in combat.

In the video game, she functions as an assist character with unique interactions: stunning enemies for Scott, providing coffee for Ramona, throwing daggers for Stephen Stills. As a playable character, her moves include spin kicks and explosive knife throws, with her mother Mrs. Chau as her striker.

Knives appears in Bryan Lee O'Malley's "Seconds" as a background patron, confirming her existence within a broader narrative universe.
