Piper's background includes significant work in theater, with critics noting his compelling performances in stage productions in the Dallas area. He appeared in the play The Shipment at the Undermain Theatre and delivered a critically praised performance as John Newton Templeton, the first freed slave to graduate from Ohio University, in Charles Smith's Free Man of Color at the African American Repertory Theater in 2012.
