Arata Miyatsuki
Description
Arata Miyatsuki is a Japanese manga writer and original creator known for his work in the suspense, horror, and psychological thriller genres. Born in Kanagawa Prefecture, Miyatsuki primarily focuses on crafting stories, frequently collaborating with different artists to bring his narratives to life. He is best known as the creator of the manga series Funohan, which is also known internationally by the titles Impossibility Defense and Perfect Crime.
The Funohan manga, written by Miyatsuki and illustrated by Yuya Kanzaki, began serialization in Shueisha's seinen manga magazine Grand Jump in October 2013 and concluded in November 2020. The series follows a mysterious individual named Tadashi Usobuki, a manipulator capable of executing perfect murders that cannot be proven by conventional means. The success of the manga led to a live-action film adaptation, which was released in Japan on February 1, 2018, directed by Koji Shiraishi. Miyatsuki received credit as the original manga writer for the film. The property was also adapted into a four-episode live-action mini-series that premiered on the streaming service dTV in December 2017.
Following the pattern of creating suspense-driven narratives, Miyatsuki wrote the manga Signal 100 with illustrator Shigure Kondo. The story involves a class of students who are hypnotized and forced to obey one hundred lethal commands, leading to a violent struggle for survival. Like his previous work, Signal 100 also received a live-action film adaptation.
Miyatsuki has demonstrated a prolific output, creating multiple series simultaneously. He wrote the manga Castration: Rebirth, also known as Kyosei Tensei, with artist Ochau. The series launched in the inaugural issue of Hakusensha's Young Animal Zero magazine in September 2019 and later moved to the main Young Animal magazine, concluding with six volumes in January 2023. In 2023, Miyatsuki began a new collaboration with artist Kentaro Sato on the remote island suspense horror manga Bokura no Natsu ga Saketeiku (Summer's gonna tear us apart), which was serialized in Young Animal from August 2023 until its conclusion in September 2025. The manga is set to be released in English by Yen Press starting in January 2026.
Miyatsuki continues to be active, launching new projects with various artistic partners. In late 2025, he started the manga Minna Onjae with artist Akeji Fujimura on Shueisha's Tonari no Young Jump website. In January 2026, he launched another new suspense manga titled Kae Dama (Substitute Spirit) with artist Masaya Tsugami on Futabasha's Web Action website. Throughout his career, Miyatsuki has worked with a variety of illustrators, including Yuya Kanzaki, Shigure Kondo, Ochau, Kentaro Sato, and others, establishing a reputation as a writer who provides the story while others handle the artwork. His body of work is consistently categorized as seinen, aimed at a mature audience, and is characterized by dark themes, criminal psychology, and high-stakes scenarios.
