Hirotaka Akagi, born on May 8, 1991, in Tottori Prefecture, Japan, is a Japanese light novel author known for works that often blend comedy with social satire. He began his writing career after winning an excellence award in the sixth Shogakukan Light Novel Contest in 2011 for what would become his debut series. He made his professional debut on July 18, 2012, with the first volume of the light novel series Shimoneta: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn't Exist, published under Shogakukan's Gagaga Bunko imprint with illustrations by Eito Shimotsuki. The series concluded in 2016 after eleven main volumes and one extra volume.
The success of Akagi's debut work led to multiple adaptations. A manga adaptation illustrated by Yuzuki N' was serialized in Mag Garden's Monthly Comic Blade from March 2014 to February 2016. An anime television series adaptation produced by J.C.Staff aired from July to September 2015, bringing Akagi's work to a wider international audience. The story, set in a dystopian Japan where all obscenity and dirty jokes have been outlawed, follows a teenager who joins a subversive group dedicated to restoring lewd humor as a form of反抗 against the government's censorship.
Following his initial success, Akagi authored other light novel series. He wrote the single-volume work Second Summer, Never See You Again, published in January 2015, which received a manga adaptation in December 2016 and a live-action film adaptation released in September 2017.
