Chugong

Description
Chugong is a South Korean author recognized as the original creator of the Solo Leveling franchise, which began as a web novel and expanded into a globally popular webtoon and anime series. The author was born in Busan in 1984 and began writing in 2016 with the work Saw the King. Chugong achieved widespread success with the subsequent web novel Solo Leveling, which established the foundation for the multimedia franchise.

The original Solo Leveling web novel, also known as Only I Level Up, was serialized on the Korean digital platform KakaoPage starting on July 25, 2016, and concluded on October 10, 2018. The novel was later published in book format by D&C Media beginning on November 4, 2016. The story follows a weak hunter who gains the unique ability to grow stronger, a concept that diverges from the established rules of the fictional world where hunter abilities are typically fixed after awakening.

A webtoon adaptation of the novel launched in March 2018, illustrated by the artist Dubu (Jang Sung-rak) of Redice Studio, with the story adapted by h-goon. The webtoon concluded in December 2021 and was published across eleven volumes. The success of both the web novel and webtoon established the intellectual property for further adaptations.

An anime television series adaptation produced by A-1 Pictures began airing in January 2024. Chugong is officially credited as part of the original work for the anime alongside Dubu and h-goon. The second season, titled Solo Leveling Season 2 -Arise from the Shadow-, premiered in January 2025. A compilation film, Solo Leveling -ReAwakening-, was released in late 2024 and featured a recap of the first season alongside preview episodes of the second season. The franchise has expanded further with a role-playing video game titled Solo Leveling: Arise and a sequel webtoon, Solo Leveling: Ragnarok, which began in 2024.

The creative identity of the Solo Leveling franchise, originating with Chugongs work, is characterized by a narrative that incorporates role-playing game mechanics, a progression fantasy structure, and a dark fantasy aesthetic. The storys central premise of an initially underpowered protagonist who systematically grows in strength through a game-like system has been noted as a significant influence within the web novel and webtoon genres. Despite the international success of the franchise, Chugong maintains a private public presence with limited media appearances.
