Akane Matsunaga is a Japanese voice actress born on October 14, 2001, in Mie Prefecture, Japan. She is affiliated with the talent agency Horipro. From a young age, Matsunaga enjoyed watching anime with her father and mimicking the characters' performances, which led her to aspire to a career in voice acting during her elementary school years. Her path to becoming a professional voice actress began when she entered and won the Grand Prix award at the Next Generation Voice Actor Miracle Audition in 2017. This victory led directly to her debut role in 2018 as Aine Yūki, the main character in the TV anime Aikatsu Friends!. This role marked the start of a significant association with the Aikatsu franchise. She reprised the role of Aine Yūki in the subsequent series Aikatsu on Parade! and later took on the role of Bloody Rock in Aikatsu! Planet. Her early work also includes the role of Leo in the short-form anime Mitchiri Wanko! Anima~tion, which premiered in 2020. Matsunaga's career has continued to expand with roles in major franchise titles. In 2021, she joined the cast of Love Live! Superstar!! as Aria Shibuya. She has also lent her voice to characters in popular video games, such as Eimi Izumimoto in Blue Archive and Eve Santaclaus in The Idolmaster Cinderella Girls: Starlight Stage. Beyond anime and games, her work includes dubbing for foreign films, such as providing the Japanese voice for Lena in the animated film Calamity, a Childhood of Martha Jane Cannary. In addition to her voice work, Matsunaga has been involved in music through her roles. As a member of the in-show idol unit BEST FRIENDS! for the Aikatsu Friends! series, she participated in performing songs related to the franchise. Her debut performance as Aine Yūki was also recognized in industry polls, placing 46th in a 2018 spring anime leading female voice actor popularity vote. Furthermore, her portrayal of the same character earned Aine Yūki an 18th place ranking in the female character category of the 41st Animage Anime Grand Prix in 2019, making it the only character from Aikatsu Friends! to appear on that list.
