Atekichi

Description
Atekichi is a Japanese author recognized as the original creator of several light novel and manga series, primarily within the fantasy and isekai genres. Atekichi first began publishing web novels on user-generated content platforms, a common starting point for many contemporary light novel authors. The earliest known work by Atekichi is the web novel The Strongest Job Is Apparently Not a Hero or a Sage, but an Appraiser (Provisional)!, which started serialization on the AlphaPolis website in August 2016. This series later won an Excellence Award at AlphaPolis's 9th Fantasy Novel Award and was subsequently published as a light novel by AlphaPolis beginning in March 2017, with illustrations by Akira Shigaraki. A manga adaptation illustrated by Atsushi Takeda followed in August 2017.

Atekichi is best known for the series Heroine? Saint? No, I'm an All-Works Maid (And Proud of It)!. This story began as a web novel on the platforms Shōsetsuka ni Narō and Kakuyomu in February 2017. It was later acquired by TO Books, who began publishing it as a light novel in March 2020 with illustrations by Yukiko. A manga adaptation illustrated by Keiko started serialization in May 2021. The series has been licensed in English by Seven Seas Entertainment, and an anime television series adaptation produced by the studio EMT Squared has been announced, with a scheduled broadcast in July. In comments made upon the announcement of the anime adaptation, Atekichi expressed surprise and gratitude, noting a personal fondness for maids and hoping viewers would enjoy the protagonist's dedicated life.

Thematically, Atekichi's works often involve protagonists who are reincarnated or transported to another world, but who subvert typical fantasy or otome game narrative expectations. In Heroine? Saint? No, I'm an All-Works Maid (And Proud of It)!, the main character, Melody, is oblivious to her destined role as the powerful heroine and saint of an otome game, instead dedicating all her efforts and magical abilities to becoming the perfect all-purpose maid. Similarly, the protagonist of The Strongest Job Is Apparently Not a Hero or a Sage, but an Appraiser (Provisional)! relies on appraisal skills rather than traditional heroic combat abilities. This focus on characters who prioritize a personal, often humble, passion over a grand, predetermined destiny is a recurring element in Atekichi's creative identity.

Atekichi holds significance in the light novel and manga industry as a creator who successfully transitioned from web novel self-publishing to professional print publication and multimedia licensing. The commercial success of Heroine? Saint? No, I'm an All-Works Maid (And Proud of It)! is evident, with the series reporting over 500,000 copies in circulation across its light novel and manga volumes, and the securing of an anime adaptation. Atekichi's body of work demonstrates the continued popularity of isekai and fantasy narratives that play with and subvert established genre tropes, particularly within the market of Japanese web and light novels.
