Hyūganatsu

Description
Hyūganatsu is a Japanese novelist and the original creator behind several manga and anime works, most notably the immensely popular series The Apothecary Diaries. The name Hyūganatsu is a pen name derived from the creator's favorite fruit, the hyuganatsu citrus, and is treated as a single word rather than a family and given name. The creator originates from Fukuoka Prefecture in Japan.

Hyūganatsu began publishing stories on the user-generated novel website Shōsetsuka ni Narō under the name Uribō. The series that would become The Apothecary Diaries was first posted there in 2011. In 2012, the story was picked up for print publication by RayBooks, marking Hyūganatsu's professional debut as a novelist. It was at the editor's request that the pen name was changed to Hyūganatsu.

The creator's bibliography is extensive and spans multiple publishing imprints. The Apothecary Diaries remains the flagship work, first released in a single volume by RayBooks and later re-published and continued as a long-running series under the Hero Bunko imprint starting in 2014. Beyond this signature work, Hyūganatsu has authored numerous other light novel series and standalone novels, including Tonariko no Ō (2013), Hihō Senka (2013), Kurimiko Ayakashi Yobanashi (2016), Nazotoki Iseki Hakkutsubu (2018), Meitantei no Jōken (2021), and Kamisama Gakkō no Okobore (2022), among others. Many of these titles have been published under imprints such as Ichijinsha Bunko Iris, Micro Magazine, Fujimi L Bunko, Shogakukan, and Seikaisha FICTIONS.

In the realm of manga, Hyūganatsu is frequently credited as the original creator or原作 (gensaku) for multiple serializations. The Apothecary Diaries has been adapted into two concurrent manga versions: one illustrated by Nekokurage and composed by Nanao Itsuki in Monthly Big Gangan, and another illustrated by Sanroku Kurata in Monthly Sunday Gene-X. A spin-off manga titled The Apothecary Diaries Side Story: Xiaolan's Memoir, for which Hyūganatsu wrote the original story, began serialization in 2025. Other manga titles based on Hyūganatsu's original novels include Kamisama Gakkō no Okobore, illustrated by Akawazu Modomu and serialized in Hana to Yume; Meitantei no Jōken, illustrated by Warabi Kugeko; Seijo ni Uso wa Tsūjinai, illustrated by Asami Yo; and Kurimiko Ayakashi Yobanashi, illustrated by Chōchin Anko.

For anime, Hyūganatsu is credited as the original creator of The Apothecary Diaries, which was adapted into a television anime series that began broadcasting in October 2023. The creator is also directly involved in a more recent and distinctive project: Ranobe Anime, a short-form anime initiative that adapts original stories written specifically for the medium. Within this project, Hyūganatsu serves as the original creator and series composer for a work titled Famufatal Ikusei Keikaku (Femme Fatale Training Plan). This story is described as a comedy about a high school boy who undertakes a dramatic diet to transform into a femme fatale as an act of revenge for his cousin. This project was compiled for television broadcast under the title Shūkan Ranobe Anime, which began airing in July 2025.

Hyūganatsu maintains a distinctive and private public persona. The creator does not make face-to-face public appearances, instead using a personal avatar named Uririn, depicted as a young boar with stripes on its back that stands on two legs. For events such as exhibition previews, Hyūganatsu has appeared wearing a full-body costume of the Uririn character. This commitment to anonymity extends to social media and blogging, where the boar avatar is consistently used.

The artistic identity of Hyūganatsu is characterized by a focus on clever, often unconventional protagonists with specialized knowledge. In The Apothecary Diaries, the protagonist Maomao is a former pharmacist whose curiosity and expertise in poisons and medicines drive the palace mystery plots. The creator's other works similarly feature characters in unique situations, such as the calorie-counting protagonist of Calories o Hīte Kudasai! or the struggling student in Kamisama Gakkō no Okobore. Hyūganatsu's own commentary on the original story for the Ranobe Anime project highlights a recurring interest in narratives about transformation and characters who defy conventional beauty standards, stating a desire to create a story about a cheerful and positive person who becomes more complete by becoming beautiful. This blend of mystery, comedy, and character-driven storytelling has become a hallmark of the creator's body of work.

In terms of industry significance, Hyūganatsu rose from the ranks of online user-generated content to become one of the most commercially successful light novel authors of the late 2010s and 2020s. The Apothecary Diaries has been a critical and sales phenomenon, with its two manga adaptations and the anime significantly broadening its audience. The creator's involvement in the Ranobe Anime project as an original writer for a short-form, multiplatform initiative demonstrates a continued role in adapting to new formats and media consumption habits within the Japanese anime industry. The extensive list of manga adaptations of Hyūganatsu's novels also underscores a consistent demand for the creator's original concepts across different publishing markets.
