Kazuto Mihara
Description
Kazuto Mihara is a Japanese manga artist born in Fukui Prefecture. He began his career in the industry as an assistant to the renowned creator Takehiko Inoue, working on the landmark manga Vagabond. Mihara made his own serialization debut in 2017 with Hajime Algorithm, a series published in Kodansha's Morning magazine. The manga, which was released in ten volumes, tells the story of a young elementary school student who is a mathematical genius.
Mihara is best known as the creator of The World Is Dancing, a manga series he wrote and illustrated. It was serialized in Kodansha's seinen manga magazine Morning from March 2021 to October 2022, with its chapters collected into six tankōbon volumes. The series is a fictionalized account of the early life of Zeami Motokiyo, known in his youth as Oniyasha, who was a pivotal figure in the development of Noh theater. Set during the Muromachi period, the story follows the young protagonist as he questions the purpose of dance and performance, eventually revolutionizing a traditional art form. An anime television series adaptation of The World Is Dancing, produced by the animation studio CygamesPictures, is scheduled to premiere in the third quarter of 2026.
Following the conclusion of The World Is Dancing, Mihara launched a new manga series titled Sora Tobu Violin, also known as Chūtobu Violin, which began serialization in Kodansha's Morning magazine in March 2025. The story centers on a bitter young man who has no interest in music until a mysterious girl appears before him.
Across his works, Mihara has demonstrated a recurring interest in exploring the nature of artistic genius and the meaning of creative expression. His protagonists are often driven individuals who seek to understand the fundamental principles behind their chosen discipline, whether it be mathematics in Hajime Algorithm, performance and Noh in The World Is Dancing, or music in Sora Tobu Violin. His work on The World Is Dancing in particular has been noted for weaving tightly constructed narratives that resonate with contemporary themes while being set in a detailed historical past. The forthcoming anime adaptation, which Mihara has expressed both surprise and joy at seeing come to fruition, is expected to introduce his work to a wider audience and expand upon the original story with new scenes and characters not present in the manga.
