Somegorō Ichikawa VII

Description
Somegorō Ichikawa VII was a Japanese actor primarily known for his career as a kabuki performer, though he also took on a small number of notable voice acting roles in anime films. He was born in Tokyo on January 8, 1973, into a prestigious theatrical family. He first appeared on stage as a child actor in 1978 and formally took the name Somegorō Ichikawa VII in 1981. In January 2018, he succeeded to a different kabuki name, becoming Matsumoto Kōshirō X.

His voice acting work was limited but featured prominent roles in two animated feature films. His first experience with voice acting for an anime was in 2016, when he voiced the mythical Pokémon Volcanion in the film Pokémon the Movie: Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel. In discussing this role, he noted that the appeal lay in portraying a character whose physical form was completely different from his own, a concept he compared to the transformative nature of acting in kabuki, where performers also take on roles such as monsters. His performance was noted by fellow cast members for its quality and the effective use of his stage-trained voice.

His second voice role was as the lead character, a boy nicknamed Cherry, in the 2021 coming-of-age anime film Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop. This role was particularly significant as it marked his first lead role in a film and his first experience as a voice actor, all at the age of 14. He was specifically chosen for the part by the film's director. For this project, he and his co-stars recorded their dialogue together, a method the director preferred to enhance the quality of the performances. He explained his approach to the role by stating he did not try to construct a character but instead used his own voice as the director had approved it for the part.
