Boichi
Description
Boichi is the professional pseudonym of Mu-jik Park, a South Korean manhwa and manga artist born in Seoul on January 29, 1973. His path to becoming a manga creator was informed by an academic background in physics, which he pursued at the university level to ground his science fiction storytelling in technical authenticity; he later went on to graduate school to study image technology. He made his professional debut in 1993, working in the Korean manhwa industry where he initially created works in the少女漫画 (shōjo) genre under his birth name. In 2004, seeking broader creative opportunities, Boichi transitioned to the Japanese manga industry, where he has since established his career.
Boichi first gained significant recognition for creating and illustrating the long-running series Sun-Ken Rock. Serialized in the bi-weekly magazine Young King from 2006 to 2016, the series follows a Japanese man who becomes the leader of a Korean gang. His body of work also includes original series such as the science fiction titles Hotel, a collection of short stories compiled in 2008, and Origin, a cyberpunk thriller serialized from 2016 to 2019. In addition to his own creations, he has served as the artist for projects where he did not write the original story, including Raqiya, written by Masao Yajima.
Boichi achieved widespread mainstream prominence as the artist for Dr. Stone, a manga series written by Riichiro Inagaki. The series was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump from March 2017 to March 2022. As the artist for Dr. Stone, he was responsible for the visual adaptation of the story, leading to his credit on the numerous anime adaptations, including the original Dr. Stone anime, Dr. Stone: Stone Wars, Dr. Stone: Ryusui, Dr. Stone: New World, and Dr. Stone: Science Future. The success of Dr. Stone led to his work being recognized with the 2019 Shogakukan Manga Award in the shōnen category. In the same year, his original manga Origin received the Grand Prize in the manga division at the Japan Media Arts Festival.
His artistic identity is characterized by a detailed and dynamic style, often emphasizing realistic human anatomy and intricate mechanical designs, a technique he has stated is based on artistic anatomy rather than traditional manga stylization. His works frequently explore science fiction themes, a reflection of his lifelong interest in the genre and his formal education in physics. Boichi’s career is notable for his successful transition from the Korean manhwa industry to prominence in the Japanese manga market, where he has worked across both seinen and shōnen publications.
