Ikkyū Juku
Description
Ikkyū Juku is a Japanese actor and voice actor born on July 12, 1950. He was born in Ishikawa Prefecture and raised in Ibaraki Prefecture. He stands 179cm tall and has blood type O. He is currently affiliated with the talent agency Kenyu Office and was previously a member of the Bungakuza Theatre Company and Mausu Promotion.
Juku developed an interest in acting and voice performance during his childhood, inspired by foreign dramas and period pieces. Despite initial family hesitation, he pursued his passion by enrolling in the Nihon University College of Art to study theater. After passing an audition, he entered the Bungakuza Theatre Institute in 1973 and became an official member of the Bungakuza Theatre Company in 1978. His early stage career included performances in Shakespearean classics such as Oedipus Rex, Macbeth, and Hamlet, as well as contemporary Japanese works, working with renowned directors Koichi Kimura and Yukio Ninagawa. He made his stage debut at age 24 in the play Tenshu Monogatari.
Although he worked steadily in theater, Juku held various part-time jobs well into his forties before his voice acting career gained momentum. His curiosity for voice work led to a respected second career in anime, video games, and foreign film dubbing.
Juku is best known for his role as Daisuke Aramaki, the chief of Public Security Section 9, in the Ghost in the Shell: Arise series, the 2015 film Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie, and Ghost in the Shell: Arise Alternative Architecture. He has voiced the Grand Bishop of the Terraist Church in Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These Seiran. In the Pokémon franchise, he voices Landau (Randoh) in Pokémon Horizons: The Series. He played Count Pythagoras in Phi-Brain - Puzzle of God, Mr. Bug in Motto! Majime ni Fumajime Kaiketsu Zorori, and Shizu's Father in the animated film Japan, Our Homeland.
His additional anime credits span a wide range of series. He portrayed Dr. Gross in Attack on Titan Season 3 and Don Octo in Star☆Twinkle Precure. He has had roles in Pluto as Reinhardt and an old merchant, in Great Pretender as a veteran detective, and in Joker Game as an interrogator. Other appearances include Clannad, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders as a doctor, Tari Tari as Konatsu's grandfather, Fractale as Gale, Silver Soul as the King of the Matatabi Star, and the 2020 remake of Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai as King Romos. He also appears in web anime such as Baki, Kengan Ashura as Atsushi Kawano, and the 2022 series Spriggan.
In video games, Juku has voiced characters in the Yakuza franchise as the head priest D aidōji in Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, in Rise of the Ronin as Nobuzane Otogai, and in the Chinese game Honkai: Star Rail. He also appears in 428: Shibuya Scramble as Teruo Atami and in Muramasa: The Demon Blade.
His live-action acting credits include appearances in the tokusatsu series Super Rescue Solbrain and the 1979 film Devil's Flute.
Juku is described as having a warm, soft baritone-to-tenor voice. His hobbies include fishing and horse racing. He leads the storytelling group Ikkyu-gumi and serves as a mentor at the Scenario Club, working to train aspiring actors and writers. He has also recorded character songs for anime projects, including music for the Pokémon series. He sometimes uses the alias Sumito Aoyado when voicing adult anime.
