Kore Yamazaki
Description
Kore Yamazaki is a Japanese manga artist best known as the creator of the fantasy series The Ancient Magus' Bride. Born in Hokkaido, Japan, her birthday is June 10, though the year of her birth has not been publicly disclosed. She is recognized as a female artist who began drawing manga at the age of seven and made the decision to pursue it as a career during high school. Before her professional debut, she self-published her own works as doujinshi online.
Yamazaki made her professional manga debut in 2012 with the series Futari no Renai Shoka (Two Persons' Love Bookshelf), which was published in Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara Forward and completed in two volumes. Her breakthrough came in 2013 with the launch of The Ancient Magus' Bride (Mahō Tsukai no Yome), which began serialization in Mag Garden's Monthly Comic Blade before moving to Monthly Comic Garden. The series has become a significant international success, with over 10 million copies in circulation as of 2022 and translations available in numerous languages. Several volumes have appeared on the New York Times Manga Best Seller list.
In addition to her flagship series, Yamazaki has created other notable manga works. From 2014 to 2017, she wrote and illustrated Frau Faust, a dark fantasy series published in Kodansha's ITAN magazine that ran for five volumes. In 2021, she launched Ghost & Witch, which began serialization on the Manga Door platform. She has also contributed illustrations for light novels, including two anthologies set in The Ancient Magus' Bride universe titled The Gold Thread and The Silver Thread, which she supervised. Her creative output extends to original novels and picture books released as special editions of her manga volumes.
The Ancient Magus' Bride received a 24-episode anime adaptation produced by Wit Studio that aired in 2017, with Yamazaki working closely with the production team. The series was followed by original animation video releases and light novels released the same year. A second season, The Ancient Magus' Bride: The Boy from the West and the Knight of the Blue Storm, was produced by studio Kafka and began airing in April 2023. Yamazaki has also served as a supervisor or scenario writer for spinoff manga series set in the same universe, including The Ancient Magus' Bride: Jack Flash and the Faerie Case Files and The Ancient Magus' Bride: Wizard's Blue.
Her artistic identity is shaped by childhood influences that include fantasy literature about fairies and creatures, particularly stories set in England, as well as Japanese supernatural and mystery themes from works by Yoshikawa Utata and Minagi Tokuichi. She has cited the Celtic mythology as a source of inspiration for her storytelling. In interviews, she has expressed a particular fondness for the tale of Beauty and the Beast, though she found the ending unsatisfying because the Beast returns to human form, which motivated her to explore relationships between humans and non-human beings in her own work. Her preferred artistic tools include a graphics tablet for sketches and screens, while she uses pen and ink for inking.
Within the manga industry, Yamazaki's work has received critical recognition. The Ancient Magus' Bride was nominated for the Manga Taisho award in 2015, placing 12th among 14 nominees. She won the PENG! Comic Prize for Best Manga in Germany in 2017. She has made public appearances at international conventions, including Japan Expo in France in 2015, Crunchyroll Expo in the United States in 2017, and events in Malaysia. Yamazaki currently resides in Hokkaido, having moved back to her home prefecture after a period living in Tokyo.
