Amy Howard Wilson
Description
Amy Howard Wilson was an American voice actress best known for her leading role in the English dub of the classic anime series Star Blazers. Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1955, she developed an interest in acting as a teenager and later graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City in 1975.
Wilson entered the voice acting industry through an unexpected opportunity. While working at the front desk of the Weist-Barron School for TV and Commercial Acting, a casting director contacted the school seeking non-union talent for a dubbing project. Wilson auditioned and was cast as the voice of Nova, the female lead and radar operator aboard the spaceship Argo, for the English adaptation of Space Battleship Yamato, which was retitled Star Blazers. She performed this role across the first two seasons of the series, known as The Quest for Iscandar and The Comet Empire. Her work on Star Blazers, which aired in syndication across the United States in the late 1970s and early 1980s, made her a recognizable figure to early American anime enthusiasts.
Years after her work on Star Blazers, Wilson returned to anime voice acting. In 1999, she was invited to voice the character Miranda in an episode of The Irresponsible Captain Tylor original video animation series, specifically in the episode titled The Rules of Being 16. Her performance in this production marked a reunion with the anime community that had continued to celebrate her earlier work.
Wilson became a regular guest at anime conventions across the United States, including multiple appearances at Otakon and Anime Weekend Atlanta. It was at Anime Weekend Atlanta in 1998 that she met her future husband, David G. Wilson III, whom she married in 2000. In 2007, she founded Studio V.O.I.C.E., a family-friendly audio production company, and produced audiobooks from her home studio. Amy Howard Wilson passed away on February 28, 2021 at the age of 65.
