Yō Yoshimura

Yō Yoshimura was a Japanese actor and voice actor born on July 10, 1954, in Kyoto Prefecture. He was affiliated with the theatre troupe剧团青年座 and was active in the entertainment industry from 1976 until his death in 1991.

Yoshimura’s voice acting career included numerous supporting and character roles in anime during the 1980s and early 1990s. He provided voices for several notable series, including the role of Butamatsu in Mōretsu Atarō. In the Ranma ½ franchise, he voiced characters including Ebiten and Wu in the film Ranma ½: Big Trouble in Nekonron, China, as well as the roles of Bakeneko and Kinnosuke in the television series. His other anime credits include roles in Majin Hero Wataru, Moomin, and the OVA Capricorn, where he voiced the character Bobo. One of his most significant roles was as Nukesaku Aida in the 1987-1988 gag anime series Tsuide ni Tonchinkan, a performance that earned high praise from the original manga’s author, who remarked that Yoshimura embodied the character so completely that it was like seeing him come to life.

Beyond anime, Yoshimura was also recognized for his work in foreign language dubbing. He was the first Japanese voice actor to provide the voice for Winnie the Pooh in Disney adaptations for Japanese audiences. He also voiced Michelangelo in the Tokyo TV broadcast of the 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series and Buster Bunny in the Japanese dub of Tiny Toon Adventures. In addition to voice work, Yoshimura was a familiar face on screen for six years as the host "Yoshi-san" on the NHK educational program Ichi ni no Sansuu.

Yō Yoshimura passed away on November 27, 1991, at the age of 37 due to a subarachnoid hemorrhage. Following his death, several of his prominent roles were inherited by other accomplished voice actors, reflecting the lasting impression he left on the industry.
