Ian Corlett

Description
Ian James Corlett, born on August 29, 1962, is a Canadian voice actor who has been active in the animation industry since the mid-1980s. He is perhaps best known to anime fans as the original English voice of the adult version of Goku from the popular Dragon Ball Z series. Corlett was part of the voice cast for the Ocean Productions dub, also known as the Saban or Westwood dub, which first introduced the series to North American audiences in the mid-1990s. For this version of Dragon Ball Z, which ran from 1996 to 1997, Corlett provided the voice for Goku and also voiced the character Master Roshi in the first 49 episodes (37 in the edited numbering). In addition to these two prominent roles, he voiced other characters in the series, such as the villain Cui.

His work on the Dragon Ball franchise began slightly earlier, as he voiced Master Roshi and the character Monster Carrot in the original Canadian dub of the first Dragon Ball series in 1995. He also served as a script writer for that production. Corlett's performance as Goku and Master Roshi extended to the television film Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might, appearing in its edited TV version. His tenure as Goku was relatively brief, and he was later replaced by other voice actors for subsequent seasons.

Beyond his foundational work on the Dragon Ball franchise, Corlett has lent his voice to several other anime productions. In the early 1990s, he was part of the Viz Media dub for the classic series Ranma ½, where he voiced several characters, including Dr. Tofu Ono, Mikado Sanzenin, and the Jusenkyo Guide. He also voiced Shuichi Tataki in the OVA series Key the Metal Idol and Hikari Daitokuji in the Project A-Ko OVA. More recently, Corlett took on the significant role of Miroku in the English dub of Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon, a sequel series to Inuyasha, which aired from 2021 to 2023. He replaced the original voice actor Kirby Morrow following his passing. In 2022, he voiced the character Pilar in the Netflix anime series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.

Corlett's career, however, is not limited to anime. He has been a prolific voice actor in Western animation, with a filmography that includes hundreds of roles. He is recognized for voicing characters such as Cheetor in Beast Wars: Transformers, the title character in the Ruby-Spears Mega Man series, Bob in ReBoot, and Hugh Test on Johnny Test. He is also a creator and producer of animated series like Being Ian and Yvon of the Yukon. This wider body of work often led to recurring collaborations with other Canadian voice actors and production companies based in Vancouver. His role in Dragon Ball Z remains a notable early achievement for introducing his voice to the global anime community as one of the first actors to portray Goku in English.
