Matthew Tompkins

Matthew Stephen Tompkins is an American actor known for his work in English-language dubs of anime, primarily for projects produced by Funimation Entertainment during the early 2000s. Born in Washington D.C. and raised in Oklahoma City, Tompkins studied English Literature and Theater Arts at Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington, where he graduated in 1989. He later moved to Dallas, Texas, a hub for voice-over and television production, where he also founded the independent film production company Wolfclan Productions in 2003.
Tompkins is perhaps best recognized by anime audiences for his role as the voice of Yujiro Hanma in the English adaptation of the classic martial arts series Baki the Grappler. In this Funimation-produced dub of the 2001 television series, he portrayed the series’ primary antagonist and the father of the protagonist. He also voiced other characters within the same franchise, including Ryuu Kaioh in Grappler Baki Maximum Tournament.
His anime voice acting credits span several popular titles from the 2000s. He provided the voice for Dominic, an alchemist who builds a mechanical daughter, in the 2003 series Fullmetal Alchemist. Tompkins also took on the role of the narrator and the character Ryusaku Murase in the series The Galaxy Railways. Other notable anime roles include Young Danjo in the ninja series Basilisk, as well as performances in Burst Angel, Desert Punk, and Samurai 7. In film, his work includes voicing Ebifurya, one of the bio-warriors serving the villain Dr. Wheelo, in the Funimation English dub of the Dragon Ball Z movie The World's Strongest. He also voiced Zimmerman in the English dub of the first Case Closed film, The Time Bombed Skyscraper.

He has appeared in over 50 feature films and 80 television roles, including recurring parts on shows like Walker, Texas Ranger and Prison Break, and a role as Secret Service Agent Clint Hill in the series 11-22-63. His work in professional theater in the Dallas/Fort Worth area earned him the Dallas/Fort Worth Theater Critics Forum Award for Outstanding Actor seven times between 1993 and 2009 for performances in plays including Othello, A Streetcar Named Desire, and Becket. He also performed in an Off-Broadway run of the play Transatlantic Liaison at the Harold Clurman Theater.
