AFRA
Description
AFRA, also known by his full name Akira Fujioka, is a Japanese musician and voice actor born on January 29, 1980, in Suita, Osaka, Japan. While his primary professional background is as a human beatbox performer, he has also taken on select roles as a voice actor in anime productions.
AFRA is best known for his voice role as Hie in the 2018 Netflix anime series DEVILMAN crybaby. Hie is a member of a group of delinquent rappers who serve as a narrative chorus throughout the series, and AFRA contributed his beatboxing skills to these musical segments in addition to providing the character's voice. The production of DEVILMAN crybaby intentionally featured several musicians and beatboxers in its voice cast, with AFRA being part of a lineup that included performers KEN THE 390 and Young Dais. The series premiered worldwide on Netflix in January 2018 and received significant critical and commercial attention.
Prior to his work on DEVILMAN crybaby, AFRA made a guest voice appearance in the anime Samurai Champloo, where he voiced the beatboxing character Shinpachi in the eighth episode. This earlier role similarly combined his musical talent with voice acting.
Beyond his voice acting work, AFRA is recognized as a professional beatboxer. He formed the group AFRA & Incredible Beatbox Band in 2005. His stage name combines his given name Akira with a reference to Afro, rather than serving as an acronym. The success of DEVILMAN crybaby brought wider recognition to his vocal performance and musical contributions within the anime medium.
