Antônio Akira
Description
Antônio Akira was a Brazilian voice actor known for his work on several anime series dubbed into Portuguese. Born on May 10, 1988, in São Paulo, he was a publicist by education and graduated from the dubbing school Central Dubrasil before pursuing a full-time career in voice acting. He began his path in performance through theater and credited his early professional growth to working under director Marli Bortoletto at the Álamo studio in São Paulo. His first job in the field was dubbing a Portuguese soap opera.
In the world of anime, Akira voiced several notable characters. He played Nakahito Kagura in the series Steel Angel Kurumi and its follow-up, Steel Angel Kurumi Encore. He described Nakahito as a timid and fearful boy who is forced to mature when he becomes entangled in adventures after accidentally kissing an android. He also provided the voice for the title character, Mars, in the series Shinseikiden Mars. In the Pokémon XY anime, he took on the role of Heath. One of his most high-profile roles was Ryuho de Dragão in the first season of Saint Seiya Omega, a modern continuation of the classic Saint Seiya franchise. Akira expressed great pride in joining the cast of such an iconic series, noting the honor of working alongside voice actors from multiple generations and the encouragement he felt from dedicated fans.
Outside of Japanese anime, Akira was also known for his work on Western animation, most notably as the voice of Leonardo, the leader of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, in the 2012 version of the series. In live-action dubbing, he worked on the Nickelodeon series Big Time Rush as Dak Zevon.
Antônio Akira died on July 26, 2015, at the age of 27 due to complications from fungal meningitis. His death was confirmed by his brother, Claudio Sasaki, and his friend and fellow voice actor, Robson Kumode. At the time of his passing, he was in an ascending phase of his career, and his work continues to be remembered by fans of the various series to which he contributed.
