Mo-suke Mattaku
Description
Mo-suke Mattaku is a Japanese manga artist and illustrator, recognized primarily as the artist for the manga Kemonomichi, which later inspired the anime television series Kemono Michi: Rise Up. Mattaku is confirmed to be a female creator, and her pen name was originally used by her brother during his school days. She operates under the circle name Zantetsuken.
Mattaku's professional career includes a range of credits as an artist, character designer, and illustrator. One of her earliest known manga works is Best Student Council, which was serialized from 2005 to 2007. She gained wider recognition as the artist for the manga adaptation of Baka to Test to Shōkanjū, also known as Baka and Test: Summon the Beasts, which ran from 2009 to 2016. Following that series, Mattaku collaborated with writer Natsume Akatsuki, the author of Konosuba, and fellow artist Yumeuta to create the manga Kemonomichi. This manga launched in Kadokawa's Shōnen Ace magazine in November 2016 and concluded in August 2024, with its 14th and final compiled volume shipping in October 2024.
The success of the Kemonomichi manga led directly to its anime adaptation. The television series, titled Kemono Michi: Rise Up, premiered in October 2019. For the anime, Mo-suke Mattaku is officially credited as an original creator and for the original character design, alongside Yumeuta. The story follows a professional wrestler and animal lover who is summoned to another world, only to reject the princess's request to kill monsters and instead pursues his dream of opening a pet shop.
Beyond her work on these major series, Mattaku has contributed to several other projects. She was the artist for the manga Akuno Himitsu Kessha from 2011 to 2013 and has worked as an illustrator for light novels. In 2024, she launched an ongoing web comic titled Inuta-san on social media platform X. Continuing her professional activity into 2026, Mattaku and Yumeuta began a new manga adaptation in February 2026 of the web story Tensei Bonjin no Eiyū Sakusei Kyōshitsu, written by Kishu. This consistent body of work demonstrates her ongoing significance in the industry as a versatile illustrator of both comedic and fantasy manga adaptations.
